A stalled job search is almost

never a talent problem. It's usually a positioning problem, a channel problem, or a specificity problem.

Work through this diagnostic and by the end you'll know exactly which lever to pull to break the silence.

The silence isn't about you — but something needs to change

Recruiters miss strong candidates every single week. ATS systems filter people out over font choices. Roles get quietly cancelled after the ad already went live.

None of that means you're unemployable — it means the search process needs a tune-up, not a personality transplant.

Are you applying to the wrong version of your role?

Job titles drift faster than most people realise. "Marketing Manager" in 2019 is closer to "Growth Lead" or "Lifecycle Manager" today.

If your searches still use last decade's titles, you're quietly missing the roles your skills actually match.

Read 30 recent ads for the work you do, note the titles that keep repeating, and add every one of them to your search filters.

Is your résumé written for humans, or for keywords?

You need both, not one or the other. Modern hiring runs on ATS keyword matching first and a five-second human scan second.

Copy the top three responsibilities straight from your target job ad, mirror that exact language in your résumé's summary and top bullets, keep the layout single-column, and lead every section with the achievement — not the task.

Are you relying on job boards alone?

The majority of roles in Australia are filled through referral and networking rather than public advertisement alone — recruiters consistently rate warm introductions above cold applications for this exact reason. If every application you're sending is a cold submission through Seek or LinkedIn Easy Apply, you're competing in the most crowded, least differentiated channel available.

Spend equal energy on the hidden layer: message the hiring manager or team lead directly with a short, specific note about why the role interests you; ask two people in your network for a warm introduction into companies on your shortlist; and attend one industry meetup or webinar a month where hiring managers are actually present. A single well-placed referral often outperforms fifty cold applications.

Getting interviews but no offers?

This is a different problem to a stalled search, and it's actually good news — your résumé and targeting are working. The gap is usually in one of three places: you're not answering the question actually being asked (practise structuring answers around a specific situation, action, and measurable result); you're underselling your impact by describing tasks instead of outcomes; or you're being outcompeted by a candidate with more directly relevant recent experience, in which case no amount of interview polish will close that gap — you need to target roles one notch closer to your proven experience first.

Ask for feedback after every second-round rejection. Most recruiters will give you at least a general theme if you ask directly and politely, and patterns across three or four rejections tell you more than any single one.

The diagnostic, summarised

No callbacks means fix targeting and keywords. Interviews but no offers means fix your story and evidence. Either way, the fix is mechanical, not personal — work the lever that matches your actual symptom, and give each change three to four weeks to show up in your results before you change tack again.
